Anonymous asked: I saw a post where you crossed out the word tribe and said it was racist, but another post you allowed the post to have the word tribe uncrossed out. My question is, I know the word is problematic but when is it okay to use the word? Or is it never?

Answer:

angryafricangirlsunited:

Never use the term “tribe” to describe African ethnic groups. (I forgot to cross the word out, I apologize). It’s a racist, white anthropological term used to degrade us. Here’s an informative post explaining why African ethnic groups should not be called “tribes”. Instead of saying “Yoruba tribe”, just say Yoruba people. Instead of saying “Luba tribe”, just say Luba people.  xx -C

Festival of the Good Death Celebrated in Cachoeira, Brazil

The Afro-Brazilian Sisterhood of the Good Death is made up of female descendants of slaves, all age 50 and over, and honours both Catholic traditions and Afro-Brazilian Candomble religious rites. The sisterhood is believed to be the oldest organization for women of African descent in the Americas. The state of Bahia received at least 1.2 million slaves from Africa and remains the most African of Brazilian states, where blacks make up around 80 percent of the population.
